Mary Robinson

ASSOCIATE MARRIAGE & FAMILY THERAPIST

I help clients build confidence and problem-solve by unpacking their resilience and exploring untapped potential using a mix of psychodynamic, emotion-focused, and strengths work. Having spent over a decade working in the entertainment industry, navigating the pressures and expectations, I pull from my creative past and incorporate it into my with clients. The personal aspect that most informs my work is my identity as a woman. Coming from a place of curiosity and cultural humility, I attune intuitively to female clients and specialize in women’s issues. The gendered norms, societal coercion to ‘do-it-all,’ and traumas women face are myriad and undeniable. I can help you develop coping skills to create the life you’re seeking.

In your first session, we'll explore what brought you in and any goals you want to achieve. At your pace, we'll discuss the community, culture and family that shaped your thoughts and behaviors. Focusing on how you interpret feelings and events, we will identify your strengths and how best to utilize them to reach your goals. Many of us have trauma or family situations that feel too overwhelming to address, emotional wounds bandaged but unhealed. Sometimes we endure depression, anxiety, or feeling out of sync and don't know how to move forward. Through empathy, authenticity, and humor, I collaborate with clients to navigate difficult circumstances by exploring their past experiences and current motivations. I approach each client as an individual and partner in the therapeutic process and deeply believe in the capacity for growth and positive change.

It hasn't always been easy for me to navigate the expectations of others, to figure out where my needs start and other people's end. To feel confident in my decision-making without mourning the roads not taken. To give myself grace when I inevitably make mistakes. But all the complications and missteps have informed my conceit of the human experience and made me better equipped to help fellow travelers. I believe we all have a story. A story created by us but with contributions from our family, culture, community, and friends. It is an honor to be trusted with your story.

I earned my B.S. from Syracuse University, where I double majored in Psychology and Television and Film Studies, and my M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. I spent over a decade working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles and pull from my creative past in working with clients. The genesis of my counseling career came in the hours spent with crew members who would seek out my office and sit on my couch, often looking for encouragement or guidance in personal and professional matters. These relationships, and how they revealed my gifts as an empathetic listener, opened the door to this work that I love. My experience includes working in a nonprofit clinic with individuals, couples, and families as well as children in an educational setting. Additional specialties include life transitions, work/life balance, stress, and ADHD.
